This is the 5th week of my Monday's With Job series.
A simple idea I started to share every Monday.
One practical productivity insight to help you work better, stay focused, and finish stronger.
As we start the week, we usually find ourselves overwhelmed with many important tasks that needs to be done. Usually they come under the term "urgent."
When everything is urgent, remember nothing is prioritized and that is what a lot of people miss sometimes.
If it is something that you can delegate then it is even better however you cannot categorize everything as urgent and still expect to progress towards your goals because our energy and time is limited in a day.
One thing I realized is that just because something is urgent it doesn't mean that it's important. For example, checking your email every hour could be categorized as urgent but does it help you to progress towards your goals?
Not really because it will be a distraction from spending time on the important things that will actually help you to progress.
So how do you tell the difference?
I use these three filters:
1. Remember that your time is limited.
Ask yourself:
"Is my time well spent on what I am doing right now?"
Important tasks are usually the ones that move you closer to your goals, not
just keep you occupied.
You need to clear the clutter in the mind so that there is clarity. When there is clarity there is direction.
2. Apply the 80/20 Rule.
Typically, 20% of your activities produce 80% of your results.
Ask yourself:
"Which tasks will create the greatest impact?"
Identify those tasks and block time for them. Not every task deserves equal attention.
3. Be accountable for your results.
Ask yourself:
"What needs to change?"
If you're not making progress toward your goals, then you have to take responsibility for it.
Ultimately you are responsible for the results that you are getting and only you can change them.
Being productive isn't about doing more things.
It's about doing more of the things that matter.
Remember: Urgent occupies your time. Important gets your results.
Don't let the urgent block out the important. Your future is built on what you consistently prioritize.
