The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chamba, has launched the month-long nationwide ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ to promote scientific farming practices, soil conservation and sustainable agriculture across the district.

The campaign, being conducted from June 1 to 30, is being implemented with the active participation of the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Department of Horticulture, Department of Animal Husbandry and NABARD.

Speaking about the initiative, Senior Scientist and Head of Chamba KVK, Dharminder Kumar said multidisciplinary teams comprising officials from KVK, Agriculture, Horticulture and ATMA departments would visit all seven development blocks of the district to create awareness among farmers about sustainable agricultural practices and the need to protect agricultural land.

He stressed the importance of preserving soil fertility and maintaining the long-term productivity of farmland for sustainable agricultural development. Farmers were urged to reduce excessive dependence on chemical fertilisers and adopt balanced nutrient management practices to improve soil health and crop productivity.

Dr Kumar said the nationwide campaign aims to educate farmers on soil conservation, sustainable agriculture and the judicious use of agricultural inputs. Through extensive outreach activities, farmers will be encouraged to adopt climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable farming techniques.

During the campaign, farmers will receive guidance on soil testing, Soil Health Cards, natural farming methods, balanced fertiliser application and water conservation measures.

Awareness programmes will also be organised to help farmers identify counterfeit fertilisers, seeds and pesticides, thereby protecting them from financial losses and ensuring the use of quality agricultural inputs.

The campaign will further serve as a platform to connect farmers with various government welfare schemes and agricultural support programmes. Information will be disseminated on initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Kisan Credit Card scheme and farm mechanisation programmes.

KVK officials expressed confidence that the campaign would strengthen awareness about sustainable farming practices, improve soil health management and enhance farmers’ access to agricultural technologies and government services, ultimately contributing to the overall development of the farming sector in Chamba district.
