THE Sabah Government Teachers’ Union (KGKS) said the increase in funding for the rehabilitation of dilapidated schools and maintenance of all types of schools from RM1 billion to RM2 billion offers a relief to Sabah.
KGKS president Murkam Hussien said school rehabilitation was particularly important for Sabah, where the Education Ministry (KPM) had identified 968 schools with deteriorating infrastructure as of the end of 2025.
Murkam said accelerating rehabilitation projects was essential to safeguard the wellbeing of students and educators, as numerous ageing school buildings in Sabah had been classified by the Public Works Department (JKR) as unsafe and unsuitable for occupancy.
He added that rehabilitated schools would help create a more conducive teaching and learning environment (PdP), while stressing the need to restore schools damaged by floods and other natural disasters.
“Sabah consistently faces challenges with schools affected by flooding and natural disasters that devastate existing infrastructure. Therefore, restoration efforts are critically necessary,” he said.
