More than 300 flights delayed after technical issue closes Gatwick Airport runway

  • Gatwick Airport was forced to close its main runway for 50 minutes on Friday afternoon due to a technical issue with a departing aircraft.
  • A Norse Atlantic Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner bound for New York performed a rejected takeoff and became temporarily disabled on the runway.
  • The runway reopened after the aircraft was towed away and a full safety inspection was carried out by emergency teams.
  • More than 330 flights suffered severe delays averaging nearly an hour, whilst several incoming flights were diverted to Luton and Stansted airports.
  • Passengers travelling through Gatwick have been advised to check their flight status as disruption is expected to persist for the rest of the day.
