Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a time of joy, reflection, and togetherness. It marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting and self-discipline, and is celebrated by Muslims worldwide with heartfelt reunions, forgiveness, and gratitude. But as we grow, the way we experience it changes. For a child, it is full of excitement and wonder. For an adult, it carries deeper emotions, memories, and responsibilities.
A Child’s Perspective
To a child, Hari Raya is the most magical day of the year. It begins the moment they wake up to the smell of delicious food and the sight of their best, freshly ironed baju kurung or baju Melayu laid out for them. The excitement builds as they eagerly get dressed, feeling proud in their new outfit, ready to show it off to cousins and neighbours.
The house is alive with warmth and laughter. Relatives pour in, filling every corner with cheerful greetings of “Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir dan Batin.” The sound of children’s giggles mixes with the clinking of plates as kuih raya—pineapple tarts, onde-onde, and crunchy cookies—are passed around. The best part? The little green envelopes filled with duit raya, handed out by beaming uncles and aunties. A child’s heart races with joy, counting each envelope, already planning what to buy.
The day is packed with excitement, but for most children, they may not fully understand the morning Eid prayer (Solat Sunat Aidilfitri) that their parents attend at the mosque. They watch as their elders gather in prayer, dressed in their best attire, standing shoulder to shoulder, thanking Allah for the blessings of Ramadan.
Fireworks crackle in the sky as night falls, painting the darkness with bursts of colour. Children run barefoot on the grass, waving sparklers, their laughter echoing in the air. To them, Hari Raya is all about happiness, play, and endless fun. They don’t yet realise that beneath all this celebration lies a deeper, more heartfelt meaning.
An Adult’s Perspective
As we grow, Hari Raya transforms into something more than just a day of festivity. The excitement is still there, but now, it is laced with nostalgia, responsibility, and a quiet sense of gratitude.
The preparations start long before the first day arrives—cleaning the house, cooking in the kitchen until late at night, making sure everything is perfect. There’s no more waking up just to receive duit raya; instead, they are the ones giving it out, seeing the same spark in children’s eyes that once shone in their own.
For adults, Hari Raya is also about fulfilling religious responsibilities, such as giving Zakat Fitrah, a form of charity that ensures those less fortunate can also celebrate this joyous occasion. It is a reminder that Hari Raya is not just about abundance but also about sharing blessings with others.
The day is no longer just about joy—it is about reconnection and seeking forgiveness. Sitting with relatives they haven’t seen in months, listening to their stories, laughing over memories from childhood. But there are also bittersweet moments—the empty chair at the dining table, the voices we wish we could still hear, the hugs we long for. As they exchange forgiveness with their parents, siblings, and loved ones, emotions run deep. The hugs last longer, the words are softer, and sometimes, there are tears—tears of love, of regret, of longing for the past.
Still, amidst it all, there is gratitude—gratitude for the family still gathered around, for the meals shared, for the traditions carried on. They realise how quickly time passes and how each Hari Raya is a blessing we must cherish.
Hari Raya is different through the eyes of a child and an adult, yet its essence remains the same—love, family, and togetherness in the spirit of faith. As children, they see it as a celebration of joy, fun, and excitement. As adults, they understand its true depth—a time for reflection, gratitude, and cherishing those they hold dear. No matter how many Hari Rayas pass, it will always be a day that brings back the people and memories that make it truly special.
