Mother and young daughter killed in Sandakan road collision after overtaking manoeuvre

A WOMAN and her seven-year-old daughter have died following a collision between a motorcycle and a car in Sandakan, after the motorcycle reportedly entered the opposite lane in an overtaking attempt.

The incident occurred at Batu 23, Jalan Labuk, at around 4pm, as the victims were travelling towards Beluran with another family member.

The child, who was riding pillion, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 28-year-old mother later died while receiving treatment at Hospital Duchess of Kent.

According to police, the motorcycle had attempted to overtake another vehicle by moving into the opposite lane before colliding with a Proton Wira travelling in the oncoming direction.

Sandakan district police chief George Abd Rakman said the young victim died at the scene.

“The injured motorcyclist and the car driver received treatment at the Hospital Duchess of Kent, while the bodies of the two victims were taken to the same hospital’s forensic unit for post-mortem examinations,” he said.

The injured motorcyclist and car driver are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been taken to its forensic unit for post-mortem examination.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - March 22, 2026
