KOTA BHARU - The mother of a five-day-old baby girl who tested positive for two types of drugs claimed she took benzodiazepine (benzo) to treat anxiety she experienced during her pregnancy.

Kelantan police chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, stated that urine test results on the woman so far have only detected benzo and did not show the presence of methamphetamine or other substances.

"The baby's mother took it for anxiety, it is anxiety medication. So when we conducted the urine test the other day, only benzo showed up, not meth or anything else," he said.

He mentioned this during a press conference after officiating the 219th Police Day Celebration and Flag-Off Programme in conjunction with National Month and the Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign 2026 at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters (IPK) here on Wednesday.

Also present were Negeri Sembilan police chief, Datuk Alzafny Ahmad, and Terengganu police chief, Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin.

Earlier, the media reported that despite being born just five days ago, a baby girl shocked hospital staff when she was found positive for two types of drugs, namely amphetamine and benzodiazepines.

The two illicit substances were detected when the baby underwent a urine screening at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZ II) on Aug 6.

Even more shocking was that investigations revealed the baby had been exposed to the prohibited substances whilst still in the womb.

Mohd Yusoff informed that the woman has been detained to assist in the investigation, however, the police cannot yet confirm whether she is a drug addict.

"So far, when we conducted the urine test, that was the result. We cannot say she is an addict," he said.

In the meantime, he added that the cause of the baby testing positive for two types of substances amphetamine and benzodiazepines is still under investigation.
