The 2026 MotoGP season got off to a dramatic start at the Chang International Circuit, where stewards made headlines with a late call during the Sprint Race.
Pedro Acosta marked his first Sprint Race win in the top class, but it didn’t come without controversy. The focus shifted away from his achievement when Marc Marquez received a late penalty following an incident at Turn 12.
Marquez had just overtaken Acosta before receiving news of his penalty, forcing him to drop behind at the same spot on the final lap. That move handed Acosta back the lead, and he went on to secure KTM’s first victory of the season.
Fans unhappy with Marc Marquez’s penalty

Marc Marquez was hit with a penalty in the final lap of the Sprint Race at the Chang International Circuit, and fans were quick to react on Reddit.
One fan didn’t hold back, saying: “What the f— was that? Marc didn’t go wide and then why should he drop a position?”
Another fan took aim at the stewards, suggesting: “Great move by Marc, stewards are morons.”
A different comment read: “Marc’s move was completely fine in my opinion, Acosta should have expected it and gone for the cutback like Marc kept doing on previous laps..”
The frustration continued with another fan adding: “Hate when great races get ruined by penalties,” while someone else focused on the race itself: “Don’t agree with the penalty but what a fantastic race.”
A final comment summed up broader concerns about consistency: “Let’s watch how many such overtakes will be penalized from now on. Simon better be consistent. Any rider can now get his rival penalized by pretending to be pushed off track for a race win.”
Marc Marquez responds to penalty after Thailand sprint race
Early on in the Sprint, Marquez found himself battling with Marco Bezzecchi, a matchup many fans had been anticipating.
But Bezzecchi’s race didn’t go as planned, as he crashed out from the lead. Marquez then seemed in control until Acosta caught up and started applying pressure.
Marquez said that his goal was to manage the pace from the front. But when he crossed the finish line in second place, he found himself penalised for a late move on Acosta.
When asked about the penalty after the race, Marquez kept his response brief: “In my opinion, the race direction decides, so I follow the rules.”
