TAWAU: A 25-year-old motorcyclist died after being involved in a road accident along Jalan Tawau-Bombalai near Jambatan Putih roundabout here at about 3.14pm on Tuesday.

The victim, who was riding a moped, was reported to have been struck by the rear right tyre of a rigid quarry lorry driven by a 34-year-old man.

Acting district police chief Supt Champin Piuh said the motorcyclist was travelling from Felda Umas towards the town centre, while the lorry was heading to Gudang Empat from a quarry at Batu 9 Jalan Apas.

“Preliminary investigations showed that after passing Jambatan Putih roundabout, the lorry driver proceeded onto Jalan Tawau-Bombalai when the road was wet due to light rain, and the motorcycle is believed to have lost control before skidding into the opposite lane,” he said here on Wednesday.

He said the impact caused the motorcyclist to be thrown into the opposite lane and hit by the quarry lorry’s rear tyre, resulting in severe injuries, and a Ministry of Health Malaysia medical officer who arrived by ambulance later confirmed the victim’s death at the scene, while the lorry driver was unhurt, with the case being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
