The Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, stated that the decision to change the weekend holiday to Saturday and Sunday was made in response to the state's resident’s desire to spend more time with their family and children.
Tunku Mahkota Ismail stated that this judgment would also have a good economic impact by facilitating the implementation of development initiatives that benefit and profit the state and its people.
"With the consent and blessing of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and the views of the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ), the state government, government agencies, and the people, I decided for Johor to return to having weekends off on Saturday and Sunday," Tunku Mahkota Ismail stated through his official Facebook page recently, according to The Malay Mail.
Tunku Mahkota Ismail stated that if any parties are unsatisfied or unhappy owing to personal agendas or who desire to create strife among the people or for political reasons, they are free to relocate to states that still follow the Friday and Saturday weekends.
"I have also instructed Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and the state mufti to review this from all perspectives," he said on Facebook recently, as reported by The Borneo Post.
Tunku Mahkota Ismail also encouraged private firms, government agencies, and relevant parties to give Muslim employees enough time and flexibility to perform Friday prayers.
According to The New Straits Times, the Johor state government's decision to reintroduce Friday as a working day beginning next year will not disrupt Friday prayers.
Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid, chairman of the State Islamic Affairs Committee, stated that the state government was dedicated to ensuring that Muslims in both the public and private sectors, as well as students, may do their required Friday prayers without interruption.
"Under the new weekend structure, both sectors are required to grant Muslim employees time off for Friday prayers, in line with guidelines set by the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department under the Human Resources Ministry," the minister said in a statement this morning.
These standards require Muslim workers to take allocated time off to fulfill their religious commitments.
On October 7, Tunku Mahkota Ismail stated that the weekend holiday in Johor would be altered to Saturday and Sunday beginning January 1.
Johor's weekend holiday was altered to Friday and Saturday on January 1, 2014, with Sultan Ibrahim's approval.
Terengganu, Kelantan, and Kedah are the other states that are now observing the Friday and Saturday weekend.
