SANDAKAN: The upcoming Kampung Semawang-Kuala Gum-Gum road will boost development in Libaran and improve the people’s livelihoods.
Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said a new two-lane road construction project spanning 19.9km involving an allocation of more than RM213 million will be implemented this year.
“In the same project, a new 577.4m bridge will be built. This is the longest bridge in Sabah which will become a landmark of Libaran,” he said while visiting the project site in Kampung Semawang.
Also present during the event were Sandakan Public Works Department Project Engineer Riny Susilawati Hamdan, Chief Parliamentary Liaison Officer Libaran Zaini Tiksun, community leaders and contractor representatives.
He said the construction of the road along the coast would be able to help the economic development of the local community to bring agro-food products to the city centre.
“The route will also be a crossroad for tourists to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Mile 19, and help increase the number of tourists there.
“Apart from that, the new bridge will also be the focus and location of anglers,” he added.
Suhaimi said the project is expected to be completed by end of 2025.
Meanwhile, Suhaimi asked the road contractor to repair the original road to Kampung Semawang while waiting for the construction of the road to be fully completed.
“The existing road is the main route for villagers and teachers,” he said.
