Kota Kinabalu: Sepanggar MP Datuk Mustapha Sakmud has called on political leaders and capable individuals to emulate the initiative of donating their Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) one-off RM100 cash aid to those in greater need.
He said the move aligns with the Madani Government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“The government has given RM100 to all Malaysians. What we are doing is redeeming it using our IC, then passing it on to those who really need it,” he said during the MyKasih donation event at Bataras Hypermarket Kolombong on Thursday.
One of the beneficiaries was Wong Kon Foh, 71, and his 53-year-old wife, who are raising two disabled daughters aged 17 and 21. The couple earn about RM200 a month from collecting used cans and rent a small room for RM330 at Taman Suria Apartment, Inanam.
“We are happy and thankful to Datuk Mustapha. It helps ease our burden, even if just a little,” said Wong.
Mustapha said the Sabah State Leadership Council had directed all elected reps, party leaders, and GLC appointees to follow suit in their areas.
“We want to prioritise the B40 group, especially among party members, and ensure this aid reaches the most deserving,” he said.
Instead of questioning the PM’s initiative, Mustapha said Malaysians should use the opportunity to give back to the community.
The donation effort began at the branch level on Aug 21 and was formalised with Thursday’s symbolic launch in Sepanggar.
He also encouraged M40 and T20 income groups to do the same by sharing their aid with the less fortunate.
“Let’s safeguard our community’s welfare this way. Hopefully, this effort will grow and benefit more people,” he added.
