Defending champion Muhamad Aznil Bidin hopes to create history with a third straight Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold in the men’s 65kg event.

MUHAMAD Aznil Bidin aims to be the first Malaysian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals when he competes in the men’s 65 kilogramme (kg) event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games here tomorrow.

The 32-year-old, who won the 62 kg gold medal in 2018 and 61 kg gold medal in 2022, said that being able to match former national weightlifter Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim’s two Commonwealth Games gold medals has spurred him to do even better.

“So far, there has yet to be a Malaysian weightlifter who has won three consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

“So I will try to create history by winning a third gold medal. That’s my dream and it inspires me,” he told Bernama here today.

He also shared that he was fully prepared for competition as he did not have trouble adapting to the conditions in Glasgow, and expected to face stiff competition from the weightlifters from India and Papua New Guinea tomorrow.

Muhamad Aznil, who plans to lift a combined 310 kg  tomorrow, said he has left it to his coach to determine the best plan to take on both challengers in defending his gold medal.

Muhamad Aznil won the 61 kg gold medal with a combined lift of 285 kg – 127kg in the snatch and 158kg in the clean and jerk – setting a Games record.

Weightlifting, which begins tomorrow at Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo here, will last for five days.
