A 29-year-old woman was rescued by members of the public after she had allegedly jumped into the ocean in Sandakan, Sabah, at around midnight on Sunday (March 30).
Sadly, the woman jumped in with her 2 children in tow, one of whom, a 5-year-old boy, was found dead from drowning.
According to a report by Astro Awani, the woman’s elder child, a 6-year-old girl, as well as the woman’s cousin, a 22-year-old man who leapt into the water to rescue the mother and her children, are still missing.
Sandakan District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahsmon Bajah, shared that early investigations found that the woman allegedly jumped into the ocean with her children in an attempt to commit suicide, due to certain problems in her personal life.
This case is now being investigated under Section 309 of the Malaysian Penal Code, which states that whoever attempts to commit suicide, and does any act towards the commission of such offence, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or with a fine or both.
As of Tuesday (April 1), there have been no reports about the woman’s cousin and daughter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the woman and her family.
