MANILA, Philippines — Muntinlupa City Mayor Ruffy Biazon ordered an urgent assessment of school security measures following the deadly shooting incident at a school in Tacloban, saying no community can be complacent against threats of violence.
Biazon said in a statement released Monday evening, that the incident, which left three people dead and at least five others injured, highlights the need to review how schools prepare for possible security threats.
The mayor said he called for a meeting with city, school, and security officials to identify vulnerabilities, address gaps, and strengthen safety measures in Muntinlupa schools.
“Although the incident is far from Muntinlupa City, the threat of such kind of violence does not distinguish geographic boundaries. No community can afford to be complacent, and that the circumstances that give rise to such acts must be carefully understood and addressed wherever they may exist,” Biazon said.
Biazon described the Tacloban shooting as shocking and alarming, noting that similar incidents were previously seen by Filipinos mainly through international news.
He said a thorough investigation into the motive and circumstances behind the attack is necessary to understand how it happened and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
“We assure all Muntinlupeños and parents of children who go to school that we will do our best to ensure the safety and security of our schools and learners,” Biazon said.
The mayor also called for prayers for the victims and their families as authorities continue to look into the incident.q
