Historically, the first year of Hijrah begins its count from the Islamic New Year when Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH) and his followers migrated from Mecca to Yathrib (now known as Medina) in 622 CE. This important event, known as the Hijrah, is commemorated in Islam for its role in the founding of the first Muslim community (ummah). Currently, the Hijrah is 1447 respectively.

The Islamic New Year starts on the 1st of Muharram, which is the first month in the Islamic calendar, which means most sacred of all besides the month of Ramadan. During this time, Muslims are forbidden to fight in a war; hence, a time of reflection in seeking for real sustainable peace. In the true sense of Islamic teachings - far from contributing to any “clash of civilisations” - encourages & embodies spiritual enlightenment and tolerance, enabling Muslims & non-believers to live in mutual understanding & peaceful co-existence.

I learned from Islamic gurus that, “The Hijrah demonstrated a strong belief in Allah & His promises. In this light, Prophet Muhammad PBUH had highlighted the basic spirit of hijrah, which is to progress to a truly better life and situation, moving away from whatever is bad, evil and harmful. If a Muslim today is more smartly knowledgeable than he was before, then he has embibed that spirit correctly.”

I believe the essense of hijrah for humanity is the metaphor for transformation, renewal & rebirth. Hijrah is the hope and the aspiration for a better future. Evidently, early Islamic philosophy emphasised an inexorable link between science and religion to find truth in life.
