Must review all projects at hillslopes, high-risk areas: Young Syefura

KUALA LUMPUR – The Pahang government has been urged to review all projects carried out on hillslopes and other areas that pose the risk of landslides.

This, according to Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, is to prevent any further loss of lives in the event of a natural disaster recurrence.

“This should be a priority especially now that our country is experiencing the monsoon season. Therefore, each relevant agency or department must conduct an inspection at all project sites located on hillslopes,” Young Syefura, who is better known as Rara, said in a statement.

She also urged all vacation spot operators in landslide-risk areas to take caution and be aware of the situation surrounding their areas.

“I request that operators take responsibility in ensuring that there are no cracks or early signs of ground movement in the area around their vacation spots and immediately report to the authorities if there are such incidents.

“The same goes for other risky areas such as along the beach and rivers. These entrepreneurs shouldn’t only be concerned with profits and take unnecessary risks.”

Young Syefura also expressed her condolences to all families involved in the landslide tragedy at the campsite located along Jalan Batang Kali-Genting Highlands yesterday.

“I pray that the search-and-rescue mission for all the victims can be carried out smoothly and completed soon.”

It is hoped that Jalan Batang Kali-Genting Highlands can be restored and utilised by the public as soon as possible as it is the main road used for those living in Batang Kali and other nearby locations to Genting Highlands, she said. – The Vibes, December 17, 2022
