Mustapha to propose splitting Sepanggar into two

Kota Kinabalu: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud will propose splitting the Sepanggar parliamentary constituency into two to address its growing voter population.

Mustapha, who is also Sepanggar MP, said the constituency currently has about 130,000 registered voters, which he described as the highest in Sabah, and an additional seat would also allow more development allocations to be channelled to the area.

“I will propose that we add another parliamentary seat in Sabah, one of them is Sepanggar. I will try to work on dividing it into two,” he said at the Sepanggar Parliamentary Mooncake Festival held in conjunction with Malaysia Day at Kolombong Plaza on Saturday.

He said the proposal could involve the existing Darau and Karambunai State constituencies, with possible changes involving Inanam, Manggatal and Kolombong, while the details would require further discussion.

Mustapha said he is scheduled to meet the Election Commission on Tuesday to discuss proposals for additional parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak.
