In a chilling discovery, human skeletal remains were found in a ditch beside a main road in Tawau district on Sabah’s east coast. The unsettling find was reported to the police at approximately 12:58 PM on Sunday, June 30. The location of the remains was near a secondary school off Jalan Dr. Yamamoto, raising immediate concerns among the local community.

Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin, the chief of Tawau police, stated that a team dispatched to the site discovered the skeleton partially concealed by tree branches, adjacent to a vegetable farm. "The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition, indicating that the individual had been deceased for a significant period," ACP Jasmin remarked in a statement released on Monday, July 1.

The police chief added that no identification documents were found at the scene, making it impossible to determine the deceased’s identity at this stage. The remains were discovered without a shirt, dressed only in a pair of black trousers. The location was an open area, and thus far, no witnesses have come forward with any information.

The body has been transported to the forensic unit at Tawau Hospital for a postmortem examination. "Our investigations are ongoing, and we are working to uncover any clues that might lead to identifying the deceased and understanding the circumstances of their death," ACP Jasmin said.

In a separate tragic incident in Labuan, an elderly man lost his life after falling into the sea from a jetty at Ujong Pasir around 7 PM on Sunday. Labuan police chief Superintendent Mohd Hamizi Halim reported that a witness observed the victim, identified as 79-year-old Lee Kam Wah, slip and fall into the water as he walked on the jetty.

Efforts to rescue the man were swift, with bystanders using a boat to retrieve him from the sea. Unfortunately, he was already unconscious when brought back to the jetty. "A medical team from Labuan Hospital arrived and confirmed that the victim had passed away at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed drowning as the cause of death," Superintendent Mohd Hamizi stated.

Adding to the sorrowful events of the weekend, a separate case in Kampung Sungai Lada saw a 47-year-old fisherman found dead in his home on Saturday, June 29. Superintendent Mohd Hamizi explained that the police were alerted to the situation by paramedics who discovered the man’s body hanging from the ceiling at approximately 10:30 PM.

The fisherman’s wife was the first to discover the tragic scene. Prior to the incident, the man had asked his wife and five children to leave the house. However, his wife and two of the children chose to stay. "The case has been classified as sudden death," Superintendent Mohd Hamizi stated, noting the emotional toll these events have taken on the families involved.

These incidents have cast a shadow over the communities in Tawau and Labuan, prompting calls for increased vigilance and community support. The police continue their investigations, urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in their inquiries. The tragic series of events serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unforeseen tragedies that can strike at any moment.
