Datuk Seri Najib Razak's official request to remove the documentary "Man on The Run" from Netflix, centered around the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, has sparked a legal maneuver that underscores the intensity surrounding the ongoing controversies. Dated January 11, the letter from Najib's legal team at Shafee and Co not only sought the documentary's removal but also suggested the possibility of legal action by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) against its makers.

The letter, addressed to key officials including Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din, and MCMC chief compliance officer Datuk Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin, argued that "Man on The Run" exhibited a biased perspective against Najib amid his ongoing trial related to the 1MDB scandal. The legal team urged the authorities to not only take down the documentary but also to prohibit the content provider from further airing the program.

Going beyond the call for removal, Najib's lawyers proposed legal action against the documentary's production team and director. They pointed to Section 211 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, highlighting its prohibition against the provision of offensive content. This strategic move, coupled with referencing common law provisions related to contempt of court, indicates the seriousness with which Najib's legal team is approaching the matter.

Alaistair Brandah Norman, one of Najib's legal representatives, confirmed the delivery of the letter to all three recipients. This development showcases Najib's proactive stance in protecting his image amidst the 1MDB scandal, revealing a keenness to curtail the distribution of content deemed detrimental to his ongoing legal proceedings.

As the controversy unfolds, the invocation of legal provisions against offensive online content raises questions about the intersection of freedom of expression, media portrayal, and legal recourse in Malaysia. The standoff between Najib's legal team and the documentary makers adds another layer to the complex narrative surrounding the 1MDB scandal, as stakeholders navigate the legal landscape amid heightened public scrutiny.
