The sentencing of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been described by 1MDB whistleblower Xavier Andre Justo as a defining moment for justice, accountability and the rule of law in Malaysia, following the High Court’s decision delivered on 27 December 2025.

Justo, whose disclosures were instrumental in exposing the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal, said the verdict carried deep personal and national significance. He viewed the court’s ruling as a long-awaited affirmation that accountability could prevail even in cases involving individuals who once held immense political power.

Najib was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for each of four charges involving abuse of power and was fined a total of RM11 billion. In addition, he received five-year jail terms for each of 21 money laundering charges. All prison sentences are to run concurrently, bringing to a close one of the most consequential corruption trials in Malaysia’s history.

According to Justo, the true victims of the scandal were the Malaysian people. He highlighted that billions of ringgit meant for public benefit were diverted, depriving the country of resources that could have strengthened healthcare, education, infrastructure and long-term development. He stressed that corruption was not an abstract concept, but one that translated into real and lasting harm, particularly for ordinary citizens who rely on public services.

The 1MDB case, he said, had come to symbolise the dangers that emerge when unchecked power, money and corruption intersect. He noted that the prolonged legal process had tested public confidence in institutions and raised doubts over whether accountability would ultimately be enforced.

Despite those concerns, Justo credited the judiciary and prosecution for demonstrating independence and resolve throughout the proceedings. He said the outcome sent a clear signal that legal accountability was not determined by political rank or past authority.

On a personal level, Justo described the verdict as the culmination of years marked by hardship, isolation and sacrifice after choosing to reveal information linked to the scandal. He said the decision reinforced his belief that exposing wrongdoing, even at great personal cost, remained worthwhile and necessary.

Beyond Malaysia, Justo said the ruling carried broader significance. He viewed it as a message of encouragement to whistleblowers and victims of corruption worldwide, as well as to those who had been discouraged or silenced. He added that the case underscored the principle that justice must be pursued consistently to retain public trust and credibility.
