Reports that Najib Razak may settle his RM50 million fine have divided Umno members, with some welcoming his possible house arrest while others fear political fallout.

PETALING JAYA: Reports that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak may pay the RM50 million fine required for him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest have sparked widespread discussion on social media and mixed reactions within Umno.

Berita Harian, quoting sources, reported that a representative of Najib was expected to make the payment at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex today.

On Sept 18, it was reported that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim had granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

However, the arrangement was subject to Najib settling the RM50 million fine imposed on him.

Umno insiders said the development could have significant political implications for the party, particularly with the Melaka state election taking place at a crucial time.

While some believe the possibility of Najib serving his sentence at home could strengthen Umno’s electoral prospects in Melaka and potentially ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16), others fear it could instead create political complications for the party.

“Of course we would be happy if Bossku is allowed to serve house arrest and be with his family.

“However, politically, we are not sure how this will impact Umno and Barisan Nasional as a whole,” said a party veteran.

Another insider suggested that the prospect of Najib’s house arrest could also create unease within Umno’s leadership, particularly among its top three leaders.

“Personally, I feel it would not be a good move for Najib to be allowed house arrest.

“When we (Umno) launched the donation drive, we received plenty of backlash from the people, even our own party members.

“Many are suffering, and RM50 million could go a long way to help the rakyat, not just one person,” he said.

Overall, sentiments among Umno members campaigning in Melaka remain divided, with the reported development generating considerable interest within the party.

While many are eagerly waiting to see who will come forward to settle the fine, others have questioned the source of the RM50 million payment.
