Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is reportedly looking at his options to pay the RM50 million fine required before he can serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
In a statement issued on Najib’s behalf, Shafee & Co. said a significant portion of his assets, bank accounts and properties remain subject to freezing orders and government enforcement action.

The law firm said Najib does not currently have full control over the disposal of some of these assets.

It added that his ability to meet the RM50 million condition therefore partly depends on circumstances beyond his control.
Najib is currently seeking legal advice and considering the available options to fulfil the payment requirement, according to the statement.
The RM50 million payment is one of the conditions attached to the conditional pardon granted to Najib.
On Sept 18, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara.
The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said Najib must comply with the stipulated conditions, failing which the conditional pardon could be revoked.
The authorities also said the conditional pardon could be revoked if the stipulated conditions were not complied with.
Najib remains in Kajang Prison for now
Shafee & Co. stressed that the pardon is conditional and that Najib’s house arrest can only be implemented once the stipulated requirements are met.
In the meantime, and until the fine is paid to the court, our client remains in Kajang Prison,” the firm said.
It added that Najib and his legal team are currently reviewing the conditions of the pardon and their practical implications.
Najib has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022.
His original 12-year sentence in the SRC International case was previously reduced to six years, while his RM210 million fine was reduced to RM50 million by the Federal Territories Pardons Board in 2024.
Doesn’t want anyone to feel burdened or obliged
The statement also addressed offers from Malaysians who reportedly wanted to help Najib fulfil the RM50 million payment condition.
While Najib expressed his appreciation towards those who had offered assistance, his lawyers said he did not want UMNO, its members, supporters or members of the public to feel burdened or obligated to contribute.
He is deeply appreciative of those who have chosen to help voluntarily according to their own means.
Their concern and support have been a great source of strength to him during this time,” the statement said.
Najib also thanked Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, members of the UMNO Supreme Council, as well as UMNO and Barisan Nasional leaders and members for their continued support.
He further expressed his gratitude to his family, friends and those who have continued to pray for him, while asking that his family’s privacy be respected.
Shafee & Co. stated that it would not be commenting further on the matter for the time being.
