Naples airport closed for €30m runway renovation this November

Italy’s Naples airport is now closed until December for a “radical” €30m (£25m) runway renovation.

From November 1, the aviation hub will be closed for a runway refurbishment and redevelopment of connecting roads until 30 November.

According to the airport: “Naples airport will be closed in November 2026 for radical and scheduled runway renovation work, in compliance with rigorous industry regulations and in line with GESAC’s priority commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards.”

The work will involve 500 people and includes resurfacing the runway to ensure the “highest standards of operational safety” long term.

Due to the closure, some flights will be temporarily transferred to Salerno Costa d’Amalfi e del Cilento airport, around an hour’s drive south of Naples, with connections to 15 domestic and international destinations.

Domestic destinations include a Ryanair flight to Bergamo and an easyJet journey to Milan Malpensa.

As for international flights, nine destinations, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Casablanca and Dubai, will all be served out of Salerno airport.

Both terminals at Salerno will be open to “accommodate the additional traffic”.

The General Aviation Terminal will handle flights to Casablanca, Dubai, Sharm el-Sheikh and Madrid.

To facilitate passenger travel throughout November, special bus services will operate between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno airport, in both directions, with increased bus frequency between Salerno airport and Salerno railway station.

Shared taxi services will also see fixed fares between Salerno airport and major railway stations in Naples and Salerno.

Elsewhere in Europe, Chios Island National airport, also known as “Omiros” airport, will be temporarily closed from 15 November 2026 to 15 March 2027.

According to the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), suspended operations will allow the runway to be extended and upgraded, reported Greek news agency AMNA.

HCAA said the improvements will ensure smooth air connectivity during the 2027 tourist season and mitigate the effects of winter weather conditions.
