Martin Odegaard’s fine second-half goal saw Arsenal kick off their Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Napoli.
The Gunners, who are aiming to go one better than last season’s final defeat this time around, looked like they would be frustrated by missed chances in Naples.
But Odegaard continued his brilliant start to the campaign by coming up with the goods 15 minutes from time to give his side a winning start in the league phase, firing in off a post from the edge of the area following a lovely team move.
It should have been a much more routine victory but Mikel Merino, Bukayo Saka, Piero Hincapie and Noni Madueke all missed sitters. Still, they maintained their 100 per cent start to the season and their attention now turns to a testing Premier League trip to Sunderland on Saturday.

Arsenal find the missing piece and may be ready to finally win the Champions League
Wednesday 9 September 2026 22:35 , Luke BakerMaybe this is the difference for Arsenal. It isn’t necessarily a new attacker, to rise to Paris Saint-Germain’s level, but their current attackers showing their true level.
Above all – in so many ways – Martin Odegaard. The playmaker has, in the last few weeks, been unrecognisable from last season. And this match-winning goal away to Napoli was the sort of moment so often missing from last season.
The beautifully angled 75th-minute shot, driven in off the post in the strongest of straight lines, only served to fully symbolise the change in direction. A game that had been fairly turgid, and reminiscent of some of Arsenal’s more debated matches last season, was instead turned into something else.
It was another win of champions, as well as a near-perfect start to the Champions League campaign to continue this perfect to the season. A 100 per cent record, and the captain looking like he’s fully on it.

FULL-TIME! Napoli 0-1 Arsenal
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:57 , Luke BakerThat’s it! Arsenal take all three points in Naples. Martin Odegaard finished off a lovely team move with a thunderbolt strike on 75 minutes to finally break the deadlock.
Arsenal should have scored more as they missed plenty of chances but one was enough in the end. They begin their Champions League campaign with three points.
NO GOAL! Napoli 0-1 Arsenal, 90+2 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:54 , Luke BakerTwo good tackles from Rice in his own half to stop a Napoli attack.
Arsenal then counter. Good save by Milinkovic-Savic as he gets down well to repel Tzolis’s shot and the rebound is turned in by Havertz but the flag immediately goes up - he’s offside. No goal
Napoli 0-1 Arsenal, 90 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:52 , Luke BakerFour minutes of added time. Arsenal should see this out but that De Bruyne moment will have been a warning.
CHANCE! Napoli 0-1 Arsenal, 88 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:51 , Luke BakerOh, Kevin De Bruyne should shoot there! The ball is flicked through to him, he’s on the left edge of the six-yard box but rather than unleashing a shot, he squares the ball across goal, thinking Lucca is there for a tap-in but he’s not! The ball runs safely away.
Let-off for Arsenal.
WATCH: Odegaard finally scores for Arsenal
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:50 , Luke BakerHere is that Martin Odegaard goal. Lovely team move and a thunderbolt of a finish.

SAVE! Napoli 0-1 Arsenal, 85 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:47 , Luke BakerNoni Madueke HAS to score there and finish this game off. He’s through one one one but can’t slot the ball beyond Milinkovic-Savic who makes himself big and denies the winger.
He then tries to go past him again before laying the ball back to Tzolis but a desperation lunging block by a Napoli defender stops it being 2-0.
Napoli 0-1 Arsenal, 82 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:45 , Luke BakerYou’d back Arsenal to see this game out now but Napoli are starting to take their chances a bit more in attack.
Nottingham Forest failure Lorenzo Lucca came off the bench in the aftermath of that Arsenal goal by the way, so can he be an unlikely hero?
Napoli 0-1 Arsenal, 77 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:40 , Luke BakerArsenal needed a hero and up stepped their captain. Superb by Odegaard. Stunning
GOAL! Napoli 0-1 Arsenal (Martin Odegaard, 75 mins)
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:38 , Luke BakerFINALLY! There’s the breakthrough for Arsenal and it’s a moment of brilliance from Martin Odegaard.
Patient build-up on the edge of the area, waiting for a chance. Odegaard shifts it inside, on to his left foot and then sends a rocket into the far corner, cannoning in off the post, leaving Milinkovic-Savic with no chance.
Superb strike!
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 73 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:35 , Luke BakerMore Arsenal changes. Gyokeres and Saka off, with Kai Havertz and Noni Madueke coming on. A quiet evening for Gyokeres, while Saka’s finishing hasn’t been great.
Surely there’s a goal in this for Arsenal?
MISS! Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 70 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:32 , Luke BakerThat probably sums up Arsenal’s finishing so far this evening. The ball drops to Tzolis in the box, he takes a huge swing at it with his left foot on the volley and the ball ends up in row Z.
Almost hilariously far over. It might’ve left the stadium to be honest...
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 66 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:27 , Luke BakerFirst subs from Mikel Arteta as Merino and Eze trot off, with Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis come one.
Two new signings entering the fray. Tzolis in particular has started his Gunners career well.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 65 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:25 , Luke BakerDe Bruyne tries to loft a pass out to the right touchline but it’s miles over the head of his intended target and flies out of play. Not vintage KdB, that...
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 63 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:24 , Luke BakerRice shifts the ball on to his right foot and gets a shot off but it’s harmlessly wide. Hands on the head from the England man.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 61 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:22 , Luke BakerVergara surges down the left on the counter but his cross for Hojlund is errant and Raya can easily come off his line to claim. You can see Hojlund’s frustration.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 58 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:19 , Luke BakerAlisson is hobbling and after a quick consultation with physios he trudges off. Politano is also subbed, as Antonio Vergara and Costantino Favasuli enter the fray
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 56 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:18 , Luke BakerSaka, inside to Odegaard and he feeds Merino but his shot barely requires more than a bend down and pick up from goalkeeper Milinkovic-Savic
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 54 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:15 , Luke BakerArsenal completely dominant here - just camped in the final third now. They probe again, Eze tries to dart into the box but he’s tackled and the hosts clear
MISS! Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 50 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:12 , Luke BakerAnother golden chance goes begging for Arsenal! It’s well-worked, Odegaard threads a ball to White in the box, he dinks it across and Hincapie takes a touch in the six-yard box but then spoons the ball over the bar!
What an opportunity! Will Arsenal live to rue these?
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 47 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:08 , Luke BakerNapoli probe early in the second half but Gyokeres is clattered on the edge of his own box, so the foul is called.
KICK-OFF! Napoli 0-0 Arsenal
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:07 , Luke BakerBack underway in Naples. And a half-time change for Napoli.
We saw goalkeeper Meret receiving treatment towards the end of the first half and he’s not fit to continue as Vanja Milinkovic-Savic comes on
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal
Wednesday 9 September 2026 21:03 , Luke BakerCan Arsenal find the breakthrough that they probably deserve in the second half?
HALF-TIME! Napoli 0-0 Arsenal
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:51 , Luke BakerAnd that’s the break in Naples. Arsenal have been the better side on the whole, and certainly dominated possession, but Napoli do look dangerous on the counter.
That Saka miss at the end of the half could loom large for the Gunners
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 45+2 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:49 , Luke BakerCorner for Arsenal and White lays it back for Hincapie but his shot is weak and easily gathered by Meret.
MISS! Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 45 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:48 , Luke BakerWHAT A CHANCE! Odegaard strides forward and slips Saka in behind.
He’s into the box, through on goal but with Lobotka pressuring from behind he spoons his shot over the bar. He has to score.
Very belatedly the flag goes up for offside but replays show he was an absolute mile on so the goal WOULD have counted. That’s a bad miss from Bukayo
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 43 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:45 , Luke BakerEze with the driving run, right at the heart of the Napoli defence and he gets clipped by Gilmour, with the Scotland international taking the booking for his team.
It’s a free-kick about 35 or 40 yards out, fairly central, but they go short and it ultimately comes to nothing
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 40 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:42 , Luke BakerArsenal probe again. Odegaard evades a couple of tackles but can’t get a shot away. Saka then goes down under Olivera’s challenge on the left but referee says nothing doing.
Good defending by Konsa to slow Alisson down and eventually block the cross as Napoli counter-attack.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 35 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:38 , Luke BakerRice with a yard of space on the edge of the box but the shot flies over the bar.
Now the Napoli physios run on to treat goalkeeper Meret. He hasn’t gone down but the magic spray is out for his quads. The players take the opportunity to get some water on board and the coaches do a quick bit of tactics work.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 33 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:35 , Luke BakerPromising attack from Napolias Hojlund runs into the channel, holds the ball up before laying off to De Bruyne and his cross is deflected out for a corner.
Ah, offside, so that was moot.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 30 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:32 , Luke BakerSaka bundles his way into the box and when the ball falls back to him, he swings a left foot at it but it’s scuffed well wide of the post.
At the other end, Alisson fizzes a dangerous low cross into the area but the Arsenal defence does enough to scramble clear
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 28 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:30 , Luke BakerOdegaard strides forward with the ball and finds a nice reverse pass to Eze on the left. He cuts in on his right foot and takes a snapshot at goal but drags it wide of the near post.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 24 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:25 , Luke BakerNapoli are definitely posing questions to Arsenal on the break. De Bruyne streams forward, feeds the ball to Alisson on the left but his eventual cross is blocked by White.
SAVE! Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 22 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:24 , Luke BakerEze loses the ball again around the edge of the box. He’s been a bit sloppy so far this evening.
But Arsenal then nearly get the opening goal! Eze is involved again as he nods a ball back into the danger zone, Merino loses his marker and fires a header at goal that Meret tips over the bar.
More or less straight at him but that was quick reactions from the Napoli stopper
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 17 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:20 , Luke BakerNapoli have started to come back into this slightly. It’s a fascinating tactical battle anyway.
By the way, De Bruyne has a superb record against Arsenal. Eight goals and five assists from 22 games against the Gunners. Will he fancy another today?
SAVE! Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 15 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:19 , Luke BakerFirst save of the day from David Raya. Di Lorenzo squares the ball to De Bruyne and he thumps a shot goalwards from 20 yards. It’s pretty central and although Raya repels it, he should probably catch it, with White then having to scramble to hook the rebound away.
Another shot comes his way soon after but it’s straight at him and he collects this one comfortably.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 13 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:15 , Luke BakerOdegaard’s whipped free-kick initially comes to not a lot but the ball is worked back in, Saka tries a spectacular overhead kick but it’s straight at Meret with no real power.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 12 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:14 , Luke BakerArsenal completely dominating possession here. Rice with an overlapping run but his byline cross is headed out.
On the rare occasion Napoli do have the ball, they’re clearly desperate to get Kevin De Bruyne involved but he’s not had a lot to sink his teeth into so far.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 10 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:12 , Luke BakerWe know how good Arsenal are from corners. Napoli have left four players up on the halfway line to avoid lots of bodies in the box. Interesting way to try and deal with the set-piece threat.
Headed away for another corner and Meret claims well. The men upfield allow Napoli to counter at speed, De Bruyne and Hojlund streaking upfield but a cross is shanked wide for a goal-kick.
An intriguing passage of play though.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 8 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:10 , Luke BakerWhite is really advanced down the right-hand side so far. with Napoli dropping so deep, there’s no issue with that.
At the moment, the Italian side can barely get out of their own half. Eze and Gyokeres with some neat interplay and Eze’s shot is blocked wide for a first corner of the night.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 5 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:08 , Luke BakerGood pressing from Saka and White to force an attacking throw-in but Napoli hack clear from it.
White then links up well with Saka again - he sees his shot blocked and Eze is then dispossessed on the edge of the box but promising from Arsenal.
Napoli 0-0 Arsenal, 3 mins
Wednesday 9 September 2026 20:06 , Luke BakerArsenal with plenty of possession early on but Politano probes down the right for Napoli when he gets the chance. Soon after, he puts in a cross but Raya off his line to claim nicely
