PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s 2025 National Day Premier Address has reaffirmed the principles of unity, freedom and patriotism as the cornerstone of Malaysia’s identity, calling on Malaysians to remain committed to national cohesion while embracing fair and inclusive development.
Anwar has called on Malaysians to firmly reject any attempts to divide the nation along racial, religious or territorial lines, emphasising that unity remains central to Malaysia’s progress since independence.
"National cohesion has always been the foundation of the country’s strength and success. Malaysia’s independence was not handed to us — it was earned through the struggles and sacrifices of many,” he said. “These sacrifices must never be forgotten, especially by future generations.”
His remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the government to reinforce national identity and social harmony under the Malaysia MADANI framework.
Describing the event as "not merely a speech, but a platform to reflect on the struggles of the past," the Prime Minister paid tribute to those who fought for independence and emphasised the ongoing responsibility to safeguard the nation’s democratic and inclusive values.
“The spirit of the Jalur Gemilang calls on the people to prioritise unity, peace and reject any elements that could tear apart the fabric of society,” he said. “This country must be independent, united, and inclusive, guaranteeing the safety of the people and a balanced, modern development.”
Held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, the address gathered close to 4,000 guests, including cabinet ministers, state leaders, top civil servants, uniformed personnel, students, youth organisations, entrepreneurs and private sector representatives.
It was part of a larger programme leading up to this year’s National Day celebrations, themed ‘Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni’ (Malaysia MADANI: A Nation that Cares), scheduled to take place at Dataran Putrajaya from 7am on Sunday.
The event also featured a recitation of the Rukun Negara pledge by members of the Student Volunteer Foundation (YSS) and children from Tabika Perpaduan, alongside cultural performances under the Harmoni MADANI segment and a rendition of the patriotic song ‘Tanggal 31’.
Reinforcing the government’s resolve, the Prime Minister stated that the MADANI administration’s ability to reduce the national fiscal deficit demonstrates Malaysia’s progress as a developing nation.
“The MADANI government’s ability to reduce fiscal deficit proves Malaysia's progress as a developing nation,” he said, adding, the 4.4% 2Q GDP growth attained and driven by a centrality approach is very real.
Anwar also cited that the efficiency seen recently in the hosting of the 46th ASEAN Summit is expected to draw more foreign leaders this October.
He also reiterated his firm stance against unethical practices, saying, “The MADANI government will not compromise on cartel issues.” On racial harmony, he emphasised that “racially divisive acts must be curbed decisively”.
On foreign policy, Anwar noted that Malaysia remains unwavering in its support for Gaza while continuing to uphold good diplomatic relations with other countries.
“Today’s independence was achieved through the struggles and sacrifices of many,” he said, stressing that the promises of past leaders must be realised through ongoing unity and balanced development. - August 30, 2025
