Kota Kinabalu: The National Day and Sabah Day celebrations on Aug 31 should serve as a platform for the people to renew their spirit of unity and collective determination to advance the state, said Kelab Sayang Sabah deputy president Steve Johnny Mositun (pic).
He said the occasion provides an opportunity for all segments of society to reflect on the progress Sabah has made and the work required for the region’s future and coming generations.
“In conjunction with National Day and Sabah Day, I urge all of us, especially leaders and the youth, to reflect and ask ourselves what we have contributed and what more we can do to develop Sabah,” he said.
Steve said leaders at all levels must continue to prioritise the people's interests, set aside unproductive differences, and find common ground to tackle existing challenges.
He stressed that the youth must be given greater room to contribute ideas, build skills, and participate in Sabah's development as they will determine the state's future trajectory.
He added that progress must be tangibly felt in the daily lives of the people through stable water and electricity supplies, improved roads, better internet connectivity, quality healthcare and education, and decent-paying jobs.
Steve emphasised that development must reach rural and interior communities so that a person’s place of birth does not hinder access to education, employment, and a better livelihood.
He noted that enduring harmony across diverse races, religions, and cultures remains Sabah’s strength, which must be protected alongside maintaining close and mature State-Federal cooperation to address state rights and development needs.
Meanwhile, Steve welcomed the six immediate initiatives announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim taking effect on Sept 1, whilst urging continuous enforcement to prevent unjustified price increases on food and basic necessities.
“Let us move forward with an open mind and mutual respect so that the Sabah we leave behind for our children is more developed, united, and offers a better life for all,” he said.
