KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) underscored the crucial role of the national matriculation system in providing higher education access to students from diverse backgrounds, particularly in Sabah.
It expressed full support for remarks made by Universiti Malaya Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman on the matter.
UMS said while freedom of expression is vital within academic settings, it must be accompanied by responsibility, sound judgment and awareness of societal sensitivities and public policy implications.
Highlighting the significance of the matriculation programme in Sabah, UMS noted that it has opened up wider opportunities for students from rural and low-income families.
“Through the matriculation pathway, many students have successfully progressed to public universities, including UMS, contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of their families and the development of human capital in the State,” said UMS Vive-CHancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.
UMS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national education policies grounded in fairness, accessibility, and human capital development, ensuring inclusive opportunities for all and strengthening the future progress of the nation.
