Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Mahavir Singh on Monday stressed the need for interdisciplinary research integrating the principles of Raja Yoga and nanoscience to advance human health and consciousness.

He was addressing participants as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a six-day National Workshop on Yoga Therapy and Alternative Therapies. The workshop is being organised by the Department of Yoga Studies as part of month-long activities leading up to the International Day of Yoga 2026.

The programme aims to create awareness about the therapeutic applications of yoga and alternative healing systems and is expected to attract participants from various parts of the country.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Singh said yoga is not merely a form of physical exercise but an effective means of holistic personality development. “In present times, yoga has emerged as a highly beneficial tool for addressing rising levels of stress, depression and various lifestyle-related health issues,” he said.

He urged students, research scholars and faculty members to make yoga an integral part of their daily lives. The Vice-Chancellor added that the university was continuously striving to promote research and innovation in the fields of yoga, health and the Indian Knowledge System.

The inaugural session was attended by Swami Krishnananda Giri as the eminent speaker, while Dr Pankaj Lalit was the guest of honour.

Swami Krishnananda Giri highlighted the role of yogic practices in regulating and channelling vital energy for the prevention and management of physical and mental ailments. He said yoga plays an important role in promoting holistic health and overall well-being.

Dr Pankaj Lalit emphasised that a healthy mind is as important as a healthy body and underlined the significance of yoga sadhana in achieving mental balance, inner peace and overall wellness.

Earlier, Dr Arpita Negi, coordinator of International Day of Yoga (IDY)-2026 activities, briefed participants about the pre-workshop programmes and events organised in connection with the forthcoming Yoga Day celebrations.

Following the inaugural session, dignitaries inaugurated the workshop’s practical therapy sessions, which included yoga therapy, mud therapy and acupressure therapy. More than 150 participants benefited from the therapeutic sessions on the opening day.
