Viral footage claiming to show the Nepal floods is spreading across social media amid the ongoing disaster. But what is behind the surge in AI-generated content during natural disasters?
The Independent used deepfake detection tools, including Resemble AI, to identify fake footage and establish what was real.
“The main incentive is going to be capturing attention and advertising revenue, because there's gonna be this massive spike in public interest over content around what's happening,” Sam Stockwell, from the Alan Turing Institute told The Independent.
“Cynically, there is this financial opportunity” he added.
