Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli resigns after violent anti-corruption protests

NEPAL'S Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned from his post, officials confirmed, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure.

He stepped down amid mounting pressure after one of the deadliest crackdowns in years left at least 19 people dead and reignited nationwide protests.

"I have resigned from the post of prime minister with effect from today... in order to take further steps towards a political solution and resolution of the problems,"  Sharma Oli, 73, said in a letter to the president.

His departure is expected to spark intense political negotiations as parties scramble to form a new government.

Protests continued in Nepal for the second day despite the government announcing that it had lifted the ban on social media platforms.

Demonstrators demanded Oli's ouster and the government's dismissal. – September 9, 2025
