Get ready for a thrilling ride across a retro-futuristic version of the 1990s in The Electric State, an upcoming sci-fi adventure film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the masterminds behind Avengers: Endgame.

The film, which is set to release on Netflix on March 14, 2025, promises to captivate audiences with its unique premise, star-studded cast, and stunning visuals. Based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, The Electric State combines elements of dystopia, mystery, and heart-pounding action.

A Post-Robot Uprising World

Set in an alternate reality where sentient robots, once serving humans peacefully, now find themselves exiled after a failed uprising, the film follows the story of Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), a young orphan navigating life in this fractured world.

But everything Michelle thought she knew changes when she encounters Cosmo, a cartoon-inspired robot that holds a connection to her younger brother, Christopher, whom she believed to be dead.

Determined to find her brother, Michelle embarks on an epic journey across the American West. Along the way, she teams up with Keats (Chris Pratt), a low-rent smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie). Together, they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off desert area where robots live on their own, discovering a colourful group of animatronic allies and uncovering dark, sinister forces behind Christopher’s disappearance.

Star-Studded Cast

The movie brings together an incredible ensemble cast, with Millie Bobby Brown leading the way. Alongside her is Chris Pratt, bringing his action-hero persona to life as the rogue smuggler, Keats. Adding even more star power are Academy Award winners Ke Huy Quan and Stanley Tucci with Jason Alexander, Giancarlo Esposito, and Woody Norman.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there—The Electric State also features a stellar line-up of voice talent, including Anthony Mackie as Herman the robot, with additional voice work by Woody Harrelson, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Hank Azaria, Colman Domingo, and Alan Tudyk. The film is packed with talent, ensuring a compelling, emotionally engaging adventure from start to finish.

A Vision Brought To Life

Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film’s screenplay brings Simon Stålenhag’s captivating graphic novel to life, capturing the haunting yet hopeful tone of the original source material. As executive producers, Stålenhag himself is involved in bringing his vision to the screen, adding an extra layer of authenticity and depth to the story.

With its striking visual style, an emotional core centred around sibling bonds, and a thrilling exploration of artificial intelligence, The Electric State promises to be a genre-defining film for sci-fi lovers. Check it out when it debuts on 14 March 2025, exclusively on Netflix.
