Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has ended his German national team career for good after Monday's World Cup exit against Paraguay.

Asked by broadcasters ARD whether the round of 32 match against the South American opponents in Foxborough was his last, Bayern Munich's Neuer said "yes."

He added towards MagentaTV he wouldn't be available for a fresh national team start after the tournament, saying "it is extremely bitter to finish in this way."

Neuer, 40, initially ended his Germany career highlighted by the 2014 World Cup title after Euro 2024. He was recalled for the World Cup and made first choice by coach Julian Nagelsmann.

He he played in all four games for a career total of 128 caps but failed to keep a clean sheet in all games and Germany went out 4-3 on penalties against Paraguay.

Neuer now returns to Munich where he has a contract for another season.
