Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer does not regret coming out of international retirement for the World Cup despite the meek exit in the last 32 to Paraguay.

The Germans lost a men's penalty shoot-out at a World Cup for the first time, having also flopped at the previous two editions since their 2014 triumph when Neuer became world champion.

The 40-year-old retired from internationals after Euro 2024 but was recalled for this tournament. The Bayern Munich man will now stick to club football again.

"We clearly fell short of expectations and should have gone further in this tournament. This ending really hurts," Neuer, who amassed 128 Germany caps, wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.

"Despite the bitter ending, I do not regret this step for a second."
