New 250MW renewable energy quota set to draw RM3b investment

MALAYSIA’S new 250-megawatt (MW) renewable-energy quota is expected to generate RM3 billion in investment and more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said.

The 2027 Feed-in Tariff (FiT) allocation, offered through the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA Malaysia), will also involve an estimated RM510 million in purchases of locally installed engine and boiler equipment.

The quota comprises 30MW for biogas, 120MW for biomass and 100MW for small hydropower projects in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan.

Eligible renewable-energy developers can submit bids online through SEDA Malaysia from Feb 3 to March 24, 2027.

PETRA said the initiative formed part of the government’s efforts to raise the share of renewable energy in the country’s electricity supply to 70% by 2050.

Projects approved under the new allocation are expected to begin generating and supplying green electricity as early as 2030.

Since the FiT programme was introduced in 2011, quotas totalling 1,660.50MW across all renewable-energy sources have been approved for 9,658 projects nationwide.
