- The charity Surviving Economic Abuse (SEA) conducted the study, based on over 400 Domestic Homicide Reviews from 2012 to 2024, finding that one individual died every 19 days in cases involving both economic abuse and intimate partner violence.
- Economic abuse is defined as controlling income, spending, bank accounts, and access to essential resources like transport, food, and clothing.
- Over half of the reviewed cases (51 per cent) involved economic abuse within intimate partner violence, predominantly affecting female victims with male perpetrators, though panels often failed to identify it.
- Experts are calling for urgent action, increased awareness, and better training for professionals to recognise and address economic abuse, which is a significant risk factor for homicide and suicide.
