The United States plans to host another round of talks between representatives of Israel and Lebanon in Washington next week, a US State Department official said.

The discussions are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, though no further details on participants were provided.

A source within the Lebanese government told dpa that the US is pushing for a de-escalation in Lebanon.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place for three weeks between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah militia, which is backed by Iran, but clashes between the two sides have nevertheless continued.

There have already been two direct talks at ambassadorial level between Israel and Lebanon in Washington.

Following a meeting between representatives of the two countries at the White House late last month, President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel.

Israel has said it hopes the direct negotiations could lead to a lasting peace agreement with Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also called for the disarmament of Hezbollah, which it has rejected.

The Lebanese government is seeking a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon. Israel says it has established a “security zone” in the area, while Lebanese officials describe it as an occupation of Lebanese territory.
