KLANG, June 29 - Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) is targeting about 67,000 passengers to use the Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) Shah Alam Line daily in its first year of operations.
Prasarana Group chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad said the figure is expected to rise to more than 117,000 daily trips within five years as public transport usage continues to grow.
He said the target reflects Prasarana's confidence that the Shah Alam Line will become the preferred choice for daily travel.
"This target reflects our confidence that the Shah Alam Line will become the public's preferred choice for daily commuting, while helping to reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel times and support the nation's low-carbon mobility agenda.
"With the opening of the Shah Alam Line, Prasarana now operates 169 rail transit stations across a network spanning 242.5 kilometres," he said at the LRT3 launch ceremony at the Johan Setia Depot here yesterday.
Mohd Nasir said the LRT3 is a strategic national investment that will transform the mobility landscape along the western corridor of the Klang Valley while strengthening the country's long-term economic competitiveness.
"The opening of 20 new stations along the 37.8-kilometre Shah Alam Line, connecting Bandar Utama and Johan Setia, will enhance connectivity and link key growth centres such as Bandar Utama, Shah Alam and Klang," he said.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim travelled on the LRT3 from Seri Andalas Station to Johan Setia Station, a journey of about 15 minutes, before officiating the launch ceremony at the depot.
Also present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.
Meanwhile, Anwar announced that the public can use the LRT3 Shah Alam Line and its feeder bus services free of charge for one month starting today in conjunction with the official opening of the new line.
