New York Knicks fans had a surprising target during their NBA championship celebrations, sending a pointed message to Elmo after a resurfaced social media post from before the Finals.
It started as an innocent message wishing both teams well, but by the end of the series, Elmo had become an unlikely target for Knicks fans celebrating the franchise’s first title since 1973.
A viral moment from the celebrations quickly spread across social media and turned the Sesame Street character into one of the more unexpected talking points of New York’s championship festivities.

Amid the celebrations, a viral picture showed a mock Elmo head mounted on a spike and being paraded through the streets.

The reason traced back to a message posted by Elmo’s official X account before the NBA Finals between New York and the San Antonio Spurs.
“Elmo hopes both teams have fun!”
While the message was intended to be light-hearted, some Knicks fans jokingly viewed it as a failure to support the hometown team during the biggest series in franchise history.
