Newcastle have agreed a £52m deal with Manchester City for Nico Gonzalez and the midfielder is set to become their biggest summer signing.
The 2025 Carabao Cup winners will pay an initial £48m for the Spaniard with a potential £4m in add-ons.
It could give City a small profit after signing Gonzalez from Porto in January 2025 for £49m.
Gonzalez, while only 24, will become the oldest player Newcastle have signed this summer after they decided they need to add more experience following the departures of captain Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali from the midfield.
The Magpies have bought 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba, who both made their debuts in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
They had looked at Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha and Marseille’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who are both 31, after Guimaraes’ £75m move to Arsenal.
Gonzalez’s arrival will take their summer spending over £200m, though they have brought in more than that following the sales of Guimaraes, Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
Meanwhile, his sale will take City’s income from transfers this summer to almost £300m, including a new club record of Savinho’s £85m move to Tottenham.
Gonzalez will become the fourth midfielder to leave City this summer, after captain Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders. They have signed one, in Elliot Anderson, with a second set to arrive, in Ayyoub Bouaddi.
