Newcastle hero Malcolm Macdonald is happy seeing Toon players ignored by England coach Gareth Southgate.
He wrote for the Evening Chronicle that it was good Anthony Gordon wasn't selected: "Why? Certainly not because Gordon doesn't deserve full England recognition after being Player of the Tournament at the age group Euros in the summer. He does. However with my club hat on I believe he is desperate for a rest having run himself into the ground for United and now he will get it after the PL match at Bournemouth on Saturday night.
"There is plenty time for Gordon to receive the international recognition he deserves. It will come automatically if he continues to play as he is doing. However there is a lot of tired players inside United's training ground, both mentally and physically, and they are in desperate need of a lighter workload.
"Callum Wilson is another. I was surprised Southgate picked him considering his injury record but then he let the cat out of the bag by adding he thought a hamstring problem would make it difficult to play Callum. Why select him then? Let him rest.
"What applies to Gordon also applies to Sean Longstaff. I think he has earned an England breakthrough but again he will benefit hugely from a fortnight's recuperation."
