Eddie Howe's Magpies had shown an interest in several proven Premier League talents over the summer, with Everton winger Anthony Gordon eyed alongside Maddison and Leeds United's Jack Harrison.
The Magpies remain interested in Gordon, but at this stage, a deal for Maddison is regarded as a much more viable proposition.
