Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon admits he was taken aback during his first game for the club.

Gordon, who signed from Everton in January in a mega money deal, thought he was having a decent enough full home debut last term.

However, manager Eddie Howe took him off at half time against Southampton, a game Newcastle went on to win in his absence.

I was trying not to be too emotional with it," he told The Mail.

I had a decent half but I knew I wasn't playing to the style of the team, which I didn't fully understand, the way they were playing.

The manager said I played well but that he needed something different in the second half. I sort of understood it, because I knew what we practice in training.

But it was difficult, I won't lie. The manager's tactical detail is so impressive. And there is so much of it compared to what I was used to before. He did warn me it would take a while (to understand), and the other players warned me too.

This pre-season can only help. There are a lot of meetings, visualizing stuff. I'm already feeling more confident in the detail and information the manager has passed onto me. I'm picking up more on the style of play every game."
