NFL ‘continuously striving’ to make sport safer after CTE risks laid bare in new study

  • A new study led by Dr Daniel Daneshvar reveals that at least one in four former NFL players could develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive brain disease linked to repeated head impacts.
  • The research found CTE in 215 of 878 former players who died between 2016 and 2021, though experts warn the actual prevalence may be higher as not all brains were examined post-mortem.
  • Applying these findings to the current active roster suggests at least 400 active NFL players could eventually develop the disease, which causes severe neurological and behavioural symptoms.
  • While the NFL has introduced helmet changes and modified rules, experts emphasise that safety gear cannot eliminate CTE risk, recommending reduced physical contact during training and youth play.
  • The NFL responded by stating it ‘continuously strives’ to make the sport safer by implementing strategies to reduce concussions and providing health support for former players.
