NFL fans divided over Buffalo Bills’ decision to honor Canada at game

The Buffalo Bills announced that both the American and Canadian national anthems will be performed prior to their season opener against the Detroit Lions at Highmark Stadium next Thursday.
Canadian rock group Barenaked Ladies is scheduled to perform O Canada, while Moana voice actress Auli'i Cravalho will sing The Star-Spangled Banner ahead of the kickoff near the U.S.-Canada border.
The unprecedented dual anthem performance occurs amid a heightened trade conflict between Washington and Ottawa, following new tariffs and border-related executive orders implemented by President Donald Trump.
Although team representatives did not comment on whether the move was intended to ease geopolitical tensions, the Buffalo franchise shares a deep history with Canadian fans, having hosted several games in Toronto between 2008 and 2013.
Social media reactions on the Bills’ post about the anthems were divided, ranging from criticism that American sports should only feature the U.S. anthem to praise for honoring the shared regional ties between Buffalo and neighboring Ontario.
