KUALA LUMPUR — National men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong is entering the final phase of his recovery, with one more medical test to clear before resuming full on-court training.

The 25-year-old said the upcoming assessment, expected to take place in the coming weeks, is aimed at ensuring muscular balance between both legs following his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

“I think the test will be carried out in a few weeks,” he told reporters after a training session here today.

Currently restricted to light training, Tze Yong said his rehabilitation has been progressing smoothly and that the pain he previously experienced has subsided.

While edging closer to a full comeback, the Johor-born shuttler said he would leave the final decision on when he can return to competitive action to his coaching team.

“I think the test will be carried out in a few weeks,” he said, adding that the timing of his return to tournaments would be determined by his coaches.

Reflecting on his injury struggles, the 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist admitted that his earlier spinal injury in 2024 was more emotionally challenging than the current setback.

“I think the last injury was tougher because it was my first injury, and emotionally I didn’t know how to cope, but now the second injury is more manageable,” he said.

Tze Yong stressed the importance of mental resilience as he navigates repeated setbacks, noting that patience is key to prolonging his career.

“I must stay strong to face the setbacks to avoid regretting decisions that could prematurely end my badminton career,” he added.

The national shuttler sustained the ACL injury during the first round of the 2025 Malaysia Masters against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long, forcing him to withdraw from the match — a moment that temporarily halted his momentum but now appears to be nearing its end as he prepares for the final lap of his recovery. - January 20, 2026
