SHAH ALAM - Calls are growing from several opposition and Umno-linked figures for Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming to honour his reported pledge to resign if Barisan Nasional (BN) won the Johor State Election, following the coalition’s landslide victory in the state polls.
PAS Information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari questioned whether Nga, who is also DAP deputy chairman, would fulfil his reported commitment, while Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh and Umno Veterans also renewed calls for the minister to step down.
Fadhli, who is also Pasir Mas Member of Parliament (MP), raised the matter in a Facebook post following BN’s strong performance in the Johor election.
“Will this promise be fulfilled?” he said in the post, which was accompanied by a picture of Nga.
The remarks referred to a previous interview with Oriental Daily, where Nga was reported to have said that he would be the first person to resign if BN won the Johor State Election and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was released.
Nga was also reported to have said that DAP did not rule out withdrawing from the unity government if the situation occurred, describing it as a “red line” for the party.
Following BN’s victory, Dr Akmal also reminded Nga of the reported pledge, sarcastically offering to assist him in preparing a resignation letter.
“Dear Nga Kor Ming, if you do not know how to write a resignation letter, come here and I will prepare one for you,” he said in a Facebook post.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Umno Veterans secretary Mustapha Yaakub urged Nga to step down from his Cabinet position, arguing that BN’s victory represented a setback for DAP.
“BN’s landslide victory has brought shame to him as a DAP leader who is outspoken and arrogant. The veterans urge and challenge Nga to immediately resign from the Cabinet as promised, for the sake of his dignity.
“This outstanding victory for BN also serves as a major blow to PMX, who campaigned in a manner that was irrational and filled with harsh rhetoric,” he said in a statement.
The Johor State Election concluded with unofficial results showing BN securing 49 seats, while PH won seven seats.
BN’s victory maintained the coalition’s dominance in Johor after it previously secured 40 out of 56 seats in the 2022 state election, forming a two-thirds majority government.
Prior to the election, Nga had reportedly linked his resignation pledge to two conditions involving BN’s victory and Najib’s release. His remarks had drawn attention throughout the campaign, particularly amid the rivalry between BN and PH despite their cooperation at the federal level under the unity government.
The calls from Pas and Umno figures came after BN president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described the Johor result as a renewed mandate for the coalition.
“This is BN’s best performance in the four years under Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s leadership in Johor. With this success, we will remain humble and focus on forming the government.
“BN to deliver and monitor implementation of Johor polls manifesto,” he said.
The result marks BN’s continued hold over Johor politics, with analysts previously attributing the coalition’s performance to voter preference for stability, continuity and confidence in the state administration under Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
