NGCP issues red, yellow alerts for Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued red and yellow alerts for the Visayas grid and a yellow alert for the Mindanao grid due to the unavailability of some power plants.

In its 8 a.m. advisory for Visayas, NGCP said the red alert will be between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., while the yellow alert will be between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,305 megawatts (MW) while available capacity is only 2,059 MW.

It said that 29 plants are on forced outage while 18 others are running on derated capacities.

The yellow alert for Mindanao will be between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand is estimated to be 2,376 MW, while available capacity is only 2,517 MW.

It said that 29 plants are on forced outage while five others are running on derated capacities for a total of 804.1 MW unavailable to the grid.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert status is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
