NGCP issues red, yellow alerts for Visayas, yellow alert for Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued red and yellow alerts for the Visayas grid and a yellow alert for the Mindanao grid on Tuesday, September 8, as major power plants continued to be unavailable.

The red alert for Visayas will be between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., while the yellow alert will be between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and also between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,507 megawatts (MW), while available supply is only 2,400 MW.

For the Mindanao grid, the yellow alert will be at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,627 MW, while available supply is 2,805 MW.

NGCP said that in Visayas, 29 plants are on forced outage while 14 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 786.4 MW unavailable to the grid.

In Mindanao, 26 plants are on forced outage, while 5 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 756.9 MW that is unavailable to the grid.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert status is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
