NGCP issues Yellow Alert for Visayas anew (BREAKING)

MANILA, Philippines - The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has once more issued a Yellow Alert for the Visayas grid on June 15, Monday, as demand is expected to be high while major coal power plants continue to be unavailable.

In its 8:00 a.m. advisory, the company said that the Yellow Alert will be between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,482 megawatts (MW), while available supply is only at 2,581 MW.

NGCP said that 26 plants are on forced outage, while 11 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 953.1 MW unavailable to the grid.

It added that the reason for the Yellow Alert was because of major Visayas coal plants still on shutdown, namely Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and KEPCO SPC Power Corp. Unit 1 (100 MW).

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not often lead to power interruptions.
